Launching our new #SummerMemories campaign

Hospice photoWe are very excited to announce our new Summer Memories campaign. You can sponsor one of our flowers.

These beautiful ornamental flowers will be displayed in bright yellow wheelbarrows around Wirral Hospice St John’s gardens until 31 August. After which, you will then be able to visit the Hospice in early September to pick up your flower, or we will post it out if that is what you have requested.Website Square

Each flower is locally sourced and is roughly 25cm high, 1cm thick and made out of a high quality resin that will not snap and should withstand all that the British summer has to throw at it. The flower will also come with a label attached on which you can write a dedication in memory of a loved one if you choose.

This campaign invites supporters to sponsor a flower and help us raise much-needed funds towards our special care and support of our patients and their families.

Local solicitors Kirwans, have very kindly sponsored this campaign, we are very grateful for their most generous support.

You shall go to the #masquerade #ball

Masque Mask

In September Wirral Hospice St John’s will be celebrating the end of summer in style with our luxurious Masquerade Ball.  A perfect opportunity to have some fun, the ball will be held on Friday 5th September at the award-winning, four-star Thornton Hall Hotel, with headline entertainment from local band Freak Out who will be playing late into the night.

Moving away from the more traditional Viennese masquerade we are taking the ball to South America for a modern and vibrant Latin party.  Guests will arrive like masked superstars on a red carpet (with obligatory photographer), and will enjoy our unique ‘Masquerade’ cocktail on the terrace before the electric atmosphere of a Latin carnival starts.

Sandra Fairclough, host of our first Mid-Summer Treat! #hospiceheroes #volunteersweek

Our very first Mid–Summer Treat was kindly held by our Hospice Sandra Fairclough's Midsummer Treatsvolunteer Sandra Fairclough and her husband Colin last month.

Sandra has been a dedicated volunteer for over six years and supports Wirral Hospice St John’s in many ways including working on the Fundraising reception, helping at many fundraising events, making and selling greetings cards and opening her beautiful garden in Heswall (Inglewood) as part of the National Gardens Scheme to raise funds.  All proceeds from these wonderful activities go to the Hospice.

For her Mid-Summer Treat, Sandra’s family and friends enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch of sandwiches and homemade cakes and took part in a raffle with some lovely prizes. Everyone at the Hospice were delighted to receive the fantastic donation of £522 proceeds from the lunch.

If you would like to help the Hospice by holding your own small event for your own family and friends we would love to hear from you. This can be anything from a BBQ to an afternoon tea. We offer lots of help, advice and support such as creating posters for you and an invitation, plus promote your event on our facebook and twitter feeds if you’d like us to, and all participants will receive a certificate of thanks following their event.

To find out more or to sign up, please contact Hayley Gough at or call 0151 343 0778.

If you would like to help Sandra to raise even more funds please visit her lovely garden on 12th or 13th July, 1.30-5pm – entrance fee is £4 per adult, children free. Delicious homemade refreshments, like the ones in the photo, will be available to buy.

Sandra is truly one of our Hospice Heroes, thank you so much for everything you do!

Our Volunteer Gardeners #hospiceheroes

hospice_gardenOn a lovely day like today our hospice gardens are at their most beautiful.  However they don’t get this way by accident, we have some real Hospice Heroes working hard all year round to keep the garden looking as good as it does – our wonderful team of Hospice gardeners.

We have beautiful award winning gardens here at Wirral Hospice and our volunteer gardeners are here working hard come rain or shine.

Heather, Rod, Ed and Stan have been volunteering over many years to ensure that our patients and their families are able to enjoy the garden area. In the summer months patients often come out into the gardens in their beds, giving them a chance to enjoy some fresh air in beautiful surroundings.

Transylvania Trek & Hospice Project 11-18 July 2013 promises to be an #adventure

wirral_hospice_st_johns_dracula_transylvaniaA visit to Transylvania would not be complete without making your way to Bran Castle (Dracula’s home)! Rich in medieval heritage, Transylvania’s reputation as being a place with vampires and mystery is sure to leave any challenger transfixed by what – or who – may be lurking within the mountains!

If tales of monsters aren’t quite your cup of tea, we can guarantee that the breathtaking views will satisfy your thirst for adventure. With the opportunity to stay in the highest mountain hut in Romania at an altitude of 2,507m, participants will wake to views of a truly spectacular nature.

Consisting of 4-5 days trekking through Transylvania’s beautiful landscape, challengers also have the opportunity help out at a new Hospice Project based in Bucharest. This new Hospice will provide free of charge care to more than 700 patients a year; day care facilities with 5,000 attendances a year, home care with over 11,000 home visits a year and much more. Challengers will be able to help the Hospice by spending time painting, decorating and improving the shell of the building, creating a more homely and comforting place to be for the patients.

Whether you’re persuaded by the idea of conquering the mountains, visiting a bear sanctuary to learn about their habitat and the dangers they face or are inspired to help with the new Hospice, you are sure to find adventure and meet friends for life whilst raising important funds for Wirral Hospice St John’s work.

Our care is free to receive but not to provide. The Hospice costs £3million to run and we receive NHS funding of about £1 million towards our work. The remainder we have to raise ourselves. We have great support from the Wirral community but need to increase our support as the need for our special care grows.

There are 2 ways in which you can take part in this challenge of a lifetime and raise money for us:

 Sponsorship option:

£300 registration fee + £1,900 sponsorship to be raised (flights & board inclusive).

Self-funded option:

£300 registration fee + £950 self funded costs (covers flights & board) + £650 sponsorship to be raised.

To find out more or to sign up, contact Kerry on 0151 343 0778 or email Your trip of a lifetime is within reach!
