‘Young Person’s Walk’ raises over £600 for Wirral Hospice #hospiceheroes

On Friday 19th December, when most of us were rushing home to switch on the heating, Brittany White, 16 and her team of friends were preparing themselves for a chilly challenge to raise money for Wirral Hospice St John’s.

From Friday to Sunday, the group walked 31.68 miles in 36 hours, camping out in the December cold to ensure the event reached tough status.

After shaving her head in September to support the Hospice (you can read about it here), Brittany felt she could do more and organised a ‘Young Person’s Walk’ with the help of her close friends from the Merseyside Arms Cadets Hoylake Detachment.

Team leader Brittany said “we wanted to challenge ourselves whilst supporting a good cause. Together as a team, we found the challenge difficult but completing it made us all feel so proud and feel that our families would be proud of us too”.

Many within the group spoke about their experiences of Cancer including Olly Fisher, whose Nan passed away due to the disease and Anthony and Brittany White, who lost their Granddad 3 years ago. Team member Owen Lines shared “my Mum suffered with Bowel Cancer and was fortunate enough to beat it”. Brittany added, “everyone in the team, (including our mascot Sam the dog!), feels proud in their own way, for their own reasons”.

The team of young walkers worked hard to make sure they raised as much as they could for Wirral Hospice by fundraising in the community. Over three Sundays in December, they packed bags in heron Foods in Moreton, adding to the total they had raised from family and friends.

“There were times during the challenge that some of us debated whether to continue but as a team, we helped each other and did the miles with only a few blisters. Completing the challenge made us all feel so proud and feel that our families would be proud of us too. It has brought us all closer together and has built up confidence in all of us”.

Brittany and the team have raised a massive £643.49 for  Wirral Hospice St John’s which will make a big difference to our future patients and their families.

Meet our models #3: Anna Christensen #hospice #fashion #show

wirral_hospice_fashion_show_anna_helena_christensenOur third interview is with Anna Menaul, Housekeeping Manager at Wirral Hospice St John’s; she was very excited when asked for an interview and can’t wait for Friday. where she hopes to be queen of the stage.

What are you most looking forward to on the night?

Donning my top hat, that is going to be amazing.

Do you know what you are going to be wearing?

I know what I am wearing on my bottom half… I haven’t been told about the top… that’s worrying me.

Our models are all members of hospice staff – who do you think is your greatest competition?

I think they are all effortless, it is going to be tough keeping up to their high standard

What are you most nervous about?

Falling over, I know everyone says it but definitely falling over.

How are you preparing for the night?

I’m popping on my super high heels all night every night, it’s been like I’ve been standing on a slope for weeks now.

What music are you hoping will play when you debut on the catwalk?

Something 70’s and funky, you know, like the Bee Gees.

What are you demanding for your dressing room?

Chocolates, loads of chocolate and a hot masseuse for my poor feet afterwards.

Have you perfected your autograph yet?  You are going to need it!

No! I hadn’t thought of that – I’ll get practising.

Finally what do you think of the likeness that has been drawn between yourself and Helena Christensen?

Just one thing – I wish.

Hayley will also be modelling at our ‘Battle of the charity shops’ fashion show. She is very excited about a couple of her themes and her ‘tribal pose’ is certainly going to be a highlight! Hayley took some time to share her thoughts on the upcoming show (after demanding a re-write that is).

What are you most looking forward to on the night?

I can’t wait for my sci-fi spot, I’m loving the sci-fi specs I’m going to wear!

Do you know what you are going to be wearing?

Yes I know. All I can tell you is a couple of the themes… Sci-fi and Tribal… it’s going to be very different…

Our models are all members of hospice staff – who do you think is your greatest competition?

I know that Evangelista will be bringing her A-game!

What are you most nervous about?

Nothing – I don’t get nerves… honest

How are you preparing for the night?

I have been getting in a lot of practice, I’ve been doing my sci-fi walk in the kitchen at  home, and practising my tribal face in the mirror in the mornings, I can’t wait!

What music are you hoping will play when you debut on the catwalk?

Barry Manilow, he’s my favourite and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What are you demanding for your dressing room?

Well, there are a few things I am going to need – nothing unreasonable like some of the other models though, all I need is sparkling water, marshmallows, fresh flowers and Bovril – nice and simple.

Have you perfected your autograph yet? You are going to need it!

Yes, naturally I am ready and poised with my pen.

Finally what do you think of the likeness that has been drawn between yourself and Claudia Schiffer?

No comment – Claudia and I haven’t spoken for years!

What are you most looking forward to on the night?

I’m really looking forward to seeing all the fabulous outfits- it’s amazing what the shop managers have managed to come up with.

Do you know what you are going to be wearing?

I do know some of what I’ll be wearing – it’s top secret though so I can’t tell you – although I think I am allowed to say I’m pretty excited about my wig.

Our models are all members of hospice staff – who do you think is your greatest competition?

Hayley, without a doubt, Hayley – she has challenged us all to see who can strut the best – she’s got to be pretty confident!

What are you most nervous about?

I am dreading facing that crowd, I’m not used to wearing such high heels – I’m going to be trying so hard not to fall over – fingers crossed I don’t.

How are you preparing for the night?

Don’t worry – there is no preparation needed.

What music are you hoping will play when you début on the catwalk?

Abba – Knowing me Knowing you – definitely, it’s got to be that.

What are you demanding for your dressing room?

Food, lots of food and nibbles – I’m going to be starving!

Have you perfected your autograph yet?  You are going to need it!

In a word… no, I’m sure I’ll manage.

Finally what do you think about the likeness that has been drawn between yourself and Linda Evangelista?

Our hair is similar, but there is no way I am that old!

You shall go to the #masquerade #ball

Masque Mask

In September Wirral Hospice St John’s will be celebrating the end of summer in style with our luxurious Masquerade Ball.  A perfect opportunity to have some fun, the ball will be held on Friday 5th September at the award-winning, four-star Thornton Hall Hotel, with headline entertainment from local band Freak Out who will be playing late into the night.

Moving away from the more traditional Viennese masquerade we are taking the ball to South America for a modern and vibrant Latin party.  Guests will arrive like masked superstars on a red carpet (with obligatory photographer), and will enjoy our unique ‘Masquerade’ cocktail on the terrace before the electric atmosphere of a Latin carnival starts.
