De-clutter for autumn and feel virtuous to boot!

Wirral Hospice staff show thanks to supporters and volunteersIt’s almost definitely time to give up hope of having any kind of summer so what better way to get ready for the autumn than by having a good clear out of all those old summer outfits that we haven’t had the chance to wear this year!

Here at Wirral Hospice St John’s we are always looking for good quality stock for our charity shops, including:

  • clothing
  • shoes
  • books
  • ornaments
  • bric-a-brac
  • games
  • toys
  • small electrical items
  • furniture
  • anything else that might be a good charity shop seller

You can drop off your pre-loved items directly at any of our shops or bring them to the fundraising office at the Hospice. Locations of our charity shops:

If you have any large items that you might need our van drivers to collect, please call our New Brighton shop on 0151 639 2531 to discuss arrangements.

Thank you in advance for anything you’re able to contribute to our summer stock appeal!

You definitely need to be in the Hospice lottery to win it!

Wirral Hospice St John’s runs a weekly lottery. For just £1 per week, people stand a chance of winning the guaranteed top prize of £2,000. The second prize of £500 can rollover up to a maximum of £10,000.

The second prize hasn’t been won for a number of weeks now and currently stands at £6,000!

Imagine the sunny holiday you could have with that or the new car or the deposit towards a house… but you need to be in it to win it!

Our Hospice cares for more than 150 patients a week and lottery fees contribute towards the equivalent cost of 10 specialist nurses each year. So as well as being in with a chance to win a juicy cash prize, you’ll be helping to make a big difference to our work across the Wirral.

We also do a special wedding favours package for the lottery, which is proving increasingly popular with bride and grooms-to-be as an alternative gift to thank their guests, rather than the traditional sugared almonds that aren’t to everyone’s taste.

To become a regular lottery member, buy a one-off ticket or enquire about the wedding favours, please call our Lottery Hotline on 0151 334 0348.

Teresa Nightingale joins the Hospice

I am thrilled to join the team at Wirral Hospice St John’s as Head of Fundraising. The Hospice has a fantastic reputation in the local community for its specialist care services so I feel very privileged to join such a worthwhile and well-respected charity.

I’m originally from the Wirral and loved growing up here so it’s really lovely to be back after a number of years in other parts of the UK. I am especially appreciating the greenery and the coastal air!

I have joined Wirral Hospice St John’s from a London-based cancer prevention charity, World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK). I was with the charity for more than 11 years and developed my career with them through a number of fundraising and senior management positions.

I am definitely not afraid to get stuck in; anything I ask people to get involved with to support Wirral Hospice St John’s work people can take comfort in the fact that I have been there and done it and will do it all over again and again! Be it running, cycling, bag-packing, collecting, car-booting, walking, climbing, abseiling, caving, dressing up in ridiculous outfits… you name it and I’ll mostly do it!

There’s an amazing fundraising team on board at the Hospice and I’m really looking forward to supporting them and raising as much money as we can for Wirral Hospice St John’s work. I feel very privileged to have joined such an incredible charity that provides specialist care in the heart of the community I grew up in.

I look forward to bringing you updates about our work and upcoming activities, and I hope to meet you in person at some point too!

Best wishes, Teresa

Family honour memory of Lisa

One of our very special patients, Lisa Dawn Davies, sadly passed away at Wirral Hospice St John’s on 15 November 2011 surrounded by her loving family. Lisa was only 34 years old and had she spent her life giving and helping others, and regularly helped many charities. Lisa was full of fun, enjoyed life and loved nothing better than spending time with her family and friends.

Lisa was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006 and went on to fight a five-year battle with the disease. In October 2011, Lisa was admitted to Wirral Hospice St John’s when her condition worsened. Her pain was managed and she was closely cared for by our specialist multi-professional team of doctors, nurses and therapists.

Lisa’s family were so touched by the special care that Lisa had received at Wirral Hospice that they decided to hold a charity evening in her memory. Lisa’s nephew Adam said: “We could really see Lisa relax once she got to the Hospice, she was visibly happier and much more comfortable. Lisa said to my nan that the hospice felt like a big hug.”

On 15 June 2012 the family hosted an event to raise money for the Hospice – it took place at St Joseph’s Parish Centre in Rock Ferry. It was very well-attended and offered entertainment of a wide variety, including dancers and live music, which added to the atmosphere of the night.

Family and friends in attendance showed great support for the night and the hard work Adam and his family had put into organising the event. It was clear that the evening was not solely a fundraiser, but a celebration for Lisa – of how much she is loved and how grateful her family are for the care she received at the Hospice.

Through all of their fundraising activities, the Davies family have raised an exceptional £3,153 in aid of Wirral Hospice St John’s. This very special donation will go towards the specialist patient care of other patients at the Hospice.
